Tempera PaintsTempera Paint (in modern times) refers to a watersoluble, non-permanent paint that dries relatively opaque with a matte finish. Modern "craft" tempera is not the same as traditional egg tempera, a permanent medium common in early Renaissance works. Most people are familiar with modern tempera from their grade school days, where it is common in elementary art classrooms. It is available in liquid form, as well as in hard blocks (also called cakes/discs/pucks), that can be activated with water to make a liquid paint. Varying the amount of water allows for different intensity and effects. Liquid tempera can be used full strength from the bottle, or diluted with water to create greater transparency or a thinner consistency. Tempera is relatively inexpensive, easy to use, and easy to clean-up with soap and water, making it great for young artists and beginners of any age. One note of caution: even though tempera is non-permanent, and some are even rated as "washable", they may still leave permanent stains on clothing or other non-porous surfaces. Appropriate clothing should be worn and you may want to consider laying down a drop cloth or newspaper to protect the work area if needed.
