Gamblin Oil Solvents & Mediums

Gamblin Artist Colors declares that their mission is to lead oil painting and printmaking into the future. To them, that means crafting materials as they ought to be, not just as they have been. Gamsol freed a generation of artists from exposure to strong solvents and in collaboration with the National Gallery, Gamblin brought painters Gamvar, the perfect picture varnish. Since the company was founded in 1980, they have been guided by the community of artists, their own studio work and insights from work and dialogue with museums around the world. Their Conservation Colors have been used to restore works by Van Eyck, Da Vinci and Van Gogh. But foremost, they are here to serve today’s painters.

GAMSOL Odorless Mineral Spirits

Gamsol is the safest solvent that allows artists to work in traditional and contemporary techniques without compromise. It can be used to thin oil colors and painting mediums, and for general studio clean-up. This 100% pure odorless mineral spirit is reusable and non-toxic when used as recommended.

GAMVAR Picture Varnish

Gamvar Picture Varnish saturates and gives greater depth to the colors in your painting and gives your work a unified and protective satin surface. Developed in collaboration with the National Gallery of Art, Gamvar goes on water-clear, stays water-clear and can be easily and safely removed with Gamsol. It is virtually odorless and ready to apply. It can be applied when the thickest areas of your painting are thoroughly dry and firm to the touch.

Gamblin Solvent-Free Fluid

This fluid, solvent-free painting medium gives oil colors more flow and transparency. It has a moderately fast drying rate and increases gloss. Made from safflower oil and alkyd resin, it is non-toxic and contains no Gamsol or petroleum distillates.

Gamblin Solvent-Free Oil Gel

This solvent-free gel medium gives colors more flow and transparency yet holds the shape of your brush mark. It has a moderately fast drying rate and increases gloss. Made from safflower oil and alkyd resin, it is non-toxic and contains no Gamsol or petroleum distillates.

Gamblin GALKYD Alkyd Medium

Galkyd thins oil colors and increases transparency and gloss. When used in greater proportions with oil color, it will level brushstrokes, creating an enamel-like surface. It is Gamblin s fastest-drying painting medium. Thin layers will be touch-dry in approximately 24 hours.

Gamblin Oil Ground

Gamblin Oil Painting Ground makes a strong, bright, non-absorbent foundation for oil paintings. It is formulated from alkyd resin, titanium dioxide and calcium carbonate. Titanium dioxide gives opacity, while calcium carbonate gives tooth for strong adhesion. Gamblin Ground makes a brighter and less-absorbent ground layer compared to acrylic gesso meaning that oil paint layers on top will better retain their color saturation.
