LORENZO DUPUIS - Writing Worlds
Reception: Saturday, November 5, 2pm
November 5 – December 1
Art Placement is pleased to present this exhibition of recent paintings by Lorenzo Dupuis. Continuing his experimentation with all-over fields of marks, these latest works incorporate pictorial and narrative elements as well as subtle modulations in density, scale, and tone to produce meditative visual rhythms.

Many have noted Dupuis’ stylistic transition over the last several years. For Dupuis, it has been a natural evolution in response to new materials and techniques. As an artist who has been active in Saskatoon for more than four decades, "a community that has strong ties to both abstract and landscape schools of painting," Dupuis has always positioned himself between the two. "I draw on both traditions," he says. In fact, these abstracted works are not completely disconnected from realism, but rather continue to be inspired by his experiences and daily observations. Viewers may uncover a diverse range of references, from ancient architectural monuments and the urban landscapes of foreign lands, to more mundane subjects like a collection of nuts and bolts spread out on a studio table.

Though each subject is carefully rendered on a minute scale, from even a slight distance, forms become indistinguishable; individual elements blend together in an all-over pattern of dots, daubs, and hatch marks. In close proximity, details once again come into focus, revealing the complex imagery and narratives embedded within each work. Like the earliest forms of writing, Dupuis’ paintings connect pictures with story-telling in a kind of pictographic language and each painting rewards intent contemplation with depth, density, and detail.

Lorenzo Dupuis lives and works in Saskatoon. He has had more than twenty solo exhibitions from Vancouver to Montreal in both public and commercial galleries and his works are found in numerous private and public collections, most notably The Canada Council Art Bank, the Saskatchewan Arts Board, RBC Dominion Securities and the ScotiaMcLeod Collection.
