Nancy Lowry - slipscapes
Reception: Saturday, October 26, 2-4pm
October 26 - November 14, 2013
Often seemingly minimal, Lowry’s paintings are like apparitions taking form. Uncannily familiar, they teeter, wondrously, in the delightful, precarious space between landscape and abstraction. Mutable and resistant to classification, they allow viewers to discover new forms and associations each time.Nancy Lowry has lived in Saskatoon since she was a child. She holds a BFA from NSCAD University and has participated in numerous workshops and residencies including many years attending and later organizing the Emma Lake Artists’ Workshops. Lowry’s unique “paintscapes” are intimately connected to landscape but demonstrate a strong affinity with abstraction and non-objective painting as well. Although intimately scaled, her paintings have a powerful presence nonetheless. There is an inescapable materiality in the heavily-tooled paint surfaces, strong gestural marks and bold use of colour. This is the first solo exhibition of Lowry’s work since 2008, which demonstrates the continuing development of her unique style.
