Art of the Inuit Reception: Coffeehouse Reception: Saturday, February 18th, 2-4pm February 18 - March 8, 2012 The contemporary period of Inuit art dates to the first exhibition of Inuit art in Southern Canada in 1949. Over the past six decades we have witnessed a spectacular evolution from a primitive art form to one of great sophistication and imagination. With modest beginnings in stone sculpture, the Inuit have branched out into graphics, textiles, ceramic and in recent years film, video & glass. With such great variety, it is hard to do more than present a representative cross section of works in various media spanning several decades and communities. This group of sculptures, graphics, and wall hangings brings together works from Arctic Quebec, Baker Lake, Broughton Island & Cape Dorset. The works date from the 1970s to the present and depict scenes from everyday activities such as the hunt as well as references to the spirit world. The artworks in this exhibition were supplied by Mark London of the Galerie Elca London in Montreal, Quebec.
