Jon Vaughn
Jon Vaughn was born in Saskatoon and holds a Bachelor's Degree from the University of Saskatchewan. In addition to visual art, he is also involved in a range of other creative pursuits including curation, design, screen-printing, music performance and production, and publishing. He is the co-founder of Videonomicon, "a curated cacophony of VHS culture", editor-in-chief at Ecstasy Editions, and Director of Pop Quiz Records. His work has been exhibited, performed, and distributed locally (AKA artist-run 2014, BAM 2015, Art Placement 2015), nationally (Regina, Vancouver, Montreal, Winnipeg), and internationally (England, France, Italy, Belgium, Argentina, Bulgaria, Germany, the United States).
Jon Vaughn is an artist who brings a wild and diverse range of subjects and sources of inspiration to his paintings. 1980s pop culture mingles with retro sci-fi and comic gore in works that are curiously beautiful. Line is a predominant element--an intuitive, searching line in which the artist’s hand and eye feel uniquely united, a kind of thinking-through-drawing. A noted electronic musician, Vaughn’s collage style often has the precision and range of digital art, at times reminiscent of early 3-D graphics and computer-generated gradients, while also maintaining a hand-made quality.
