Lorna Russell

Lorna Russell was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in 1933. Lorna began her lifelong study of prairie landscapes as a child when she accompanied her father, a University of Saskatchewan plant pathologist and botanist, as he travelled to research and document various elements of the prairie grasslands around Saskatchewan. Robert N. Hurley accompanied Lorna and her family on many of these trips as a lab technician and she was able to observe his landscape painting during these treks. She incorporated art classes into her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Saskatchewan (completed in 1956) and later obtained her Professional "A" Teaching Certificate from the University of Saskatchewan in 1968 with a focus on art education. During the late 1960s and 1970s, she was employed as an art educator and consultant for the public school system and various arts organizations such as the Saskatchewan Society for Education Through Art and the Mendel Art Gallery. As a result, she has become a mentor for many generations of prairie artists and art educators. She has faithfully documented specific sites over the years and continually strives to find new challenges in the mix of natural elements. Her distinctive prairie landscapes, have been exhibited across Canada in various solo and group exhibitions and can be found in many private and public collections.
