William Perehudoff was born near Saskatoon in 1918. Active from the late 1940s to 2003, he is considered to be one of Canada’s major abstract painters. Perehudoff studied with the French artist Jean Charlot at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center from 1948-1949, and with the French Purist Amedee Ozenfant at the Ozenfant School of Fine Arts in New York from 1949-1950. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s he was an active participant in the Emma Lake Artists' Workshops, under workshop leaders Will Barnet (1957), Herman Cherry (1961), Clement Greenberg (1962), Kenneth Noland (1963), and Donald Judd (1968). In 1988 he was a workshop leader, himself. His work has been widely exhibited at commercial galleries in Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom, as well as museum exhibitions throughout Canada, including Remai Modern, Saskatoon; the Mendel Art Gallery, Saskatoon; the National Gallery, Ottawa; Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto; Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, Halifax; the Edmonton Art Gallery; The Art Gallery of Windsor; the MacKenzie Art Gallery, Regina; and the Glenbow Art Gallery, Calgary. His work is held in private and public collections in Canada, the US and Europe. In 2011, The Mendel Art Gallery in Saskatoon organized the touring exhibition, The Optimism of Colour: William Perehudoff, a Retrospective, featuring over sixty works drawn from public and private Canadian collections. William Perehudoff passed away in Saskatoon in 2013.
