Jane Harington

Jane Harington is a Saskatoon-based painter known for her luscious and painterly interpretations of floral bouquets and the Saskatchewan landscape. Harington works in oils with a loose and gestural style, combining thick paint and quick, energetic brush strokes with bold and inventive colour choices. There is a dynamic energy to her paintings, which seem to vibrate with echoes of her activity in the studio. Her paintings are inspired by the natural world--cut flowers from her garden as well as scenes of Saskatchewan's rolling hills and tangled brush--but Harington allows herself to move beyond the appearances of things to instead focus on the sensational and emotional dimensions of objects and places. Harington's take on the local landscape is also informed by her international upbringing; she was born on the Falkland Islands, grew up in Zambia and Zimbabwe, and studied in South Africa, where she received a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from the University of Capetown in 1978. Her adult life has been spent living in Zimbabwe and England before she moved to Canada with her family in 1991. Her art education began in Saskatoon where she studied under several local artists before completing a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of Saskatchewan in 2004. Her work has been shown in group and solo shows in cities across the province, and is included in private collections in Canada, the United States, Britain, and South Africa, as well as the collection of the University of Saskatchewan.
