Cameron Forbes

Artist Statement
Primarily, I am interested in the landscape we occupy as individuals and as communities. Canada has a long tradition of landscape painting. Most people are as familiar with viewing paintings of natural landscapes as they are with seeing it with their own eyes.

The relationship between these modes of being with the country--as passive and active observer--fascinate me. Landscape/plein air painting has a strong association with the past, memory and idealized beauty; uncomplicated nostalgia.

However, the genre is inextricably tied to a history of exploration, exploitation, settlement and colonization. This tension informs much of my practice.

Bio
Cam Forbes holds a BFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (2005) and an MFA from Concordia University (2016). She also studied at the Kootenay School of Art and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. In 2006, Forbes returned to her home province to complete a year long residency with the Saskatchewan Arts Board and Nature Saskatchewan, developing several community engaged projects exploring the rural relationship with landscape. From 2007-2013, she lived in Winnipeg Manitoba, developing urban landscape plein air explorations and community based art projects. In Winnipeg, she was also the executive director of Art City from 2008-2011. She exhibits her work in galleries and alternative forums, including various domestic environments, public access television, the internet, and community festivals. Cam is currently an Assistant Professor in Painting and Drawing, Visual Arts, at Grenfell Campus, Memorial University, Corner Brook, NL.
