Terry Fenton was born on July 1, 1940 in Regina, Saskatchewan. In addition
to his painting practice, Fenton is a writer, critic and author on various articles
and books pertaining to Canadian and international artists. During his studies
at the University of Regina (Regina)and the University of Saskatchewan (Saskatoon)
in the areas of English Literature and the Fine Arts, Fenton participated in
various Emma Lake Artists Workshops, including those led by Lawrence Alloway
and John Cage (1965), Frank Stella (1967) and Michael Steiner (1969). Fenton
himself has served as a guest critic at artists workshops throughout North America
and the UK over the years.In 1982, at the request of Sir Anthony Caro and UK
collector Robert Loder, Fenton along with twenty four other artists from the
US,Canada and the UK, helped to establish the Triangle Artists Workshop in New
York State; an international, non-profit network of support for artists and
arts organizations which continues today. His contribution to various public
art galleries and arts organizations throughout Western Canada include his role
as the Director of The Edmonton Art Gallery (Edmonton, AB,1972-1988), the Artistic
Director of the Leighton Foundation (Calgary, AB, 1988-93), the Director of
the Mendel Art Gallery (Saskatoon, SK, 1993-97), and as the President of the
Saskatchewan Arts Alliance (1997-2000).
