Douglas Bentham

Douglas Bentham has maintained an international reputation as a major practitioner of abstract, constructivist sculpture for over fifty years. ‘He is one of the country’s most prolific sculptors,’ writes art critic Terry Fenton, ‘one of its finest, one of Canada’s first sculptors in every sense.’

Bentham graduated with a BA Advanced degree in painting from the University of Saskatchewan in 1969. He received an MFA in sculpture from that institution in 1989, working alongside eminent artists/teachers Eli Bornstein and Otto Rogers. He has contributed to many international artist workshops throughout his career, including the Emma Lake Artists’ Workshop; the Triangle Artists’ Workshop, New York; and the Hardingham Sculpture Workshop, Norfolk, UK. He has presented over fifty solo exhibitions across Canada.

Bentham produces abstract sculpture in various mediums including steel, stainless steel, bronze, brass and wood. He creates his unique objects in scales ranging from monumental pieces to works that can be held in the hand. He has exhibited nationally and internationally and his works can be found in many private and corporate collections. Bentham’s sculptures are also represented in the collections of numerous public institutions across Canada.

In a review of his recent “Spanish Voices” series in the Fall 2012 issue of Border Crossings magazine, Ron Shuebrook says “Bentham has persevered with his personal inquiries ... and his disciplined and inspiring new sculptures confirm the continuing viability of rigorous abstraction. These vital, complex and fresh works are clearly the creations of a mature artist of persistent conviction and enormous talent.
