Clint Hunker: TOWARDS THE STRAWBERRY HILLS Reception: Saturday, April 4th, 2pm April 4 – April 30, 2015
Clint Hunker has drawn and painted the Saskatchewan landscape since he was a teenager. In addition to his technical virtuosity, including a deep understanding of colour and great facility in paint handling, his works are also inescapably tied to rigorous observation, which imbues each picture with the distinct essence of a particular time and place. Hunker is a steadfast proponent of painting on site, which results in pictures of a modest scale rendered in a style that is resolutely succinct.
Hunker is an artist who strives to do more with less. The value and intensity of each carefully mixed colour and the weight, scale and direction of every brush stroke are placed with the utmost consideration, as well as a speed and confidence that can only come from a well-practiced hand. The resulting works present astonishing accuracy with an extraordinary economy of means. Open, airy, and expansive, the lightness of touch and the brevity of his marks belie the sophistication of his simplifications.
Clint Hunker studied visual art at the University of Victoria and the University of Saskatchewan and holds a Master of Fine Arts from the latter. He has been a sessional instructor at the University of Saskatchewan since 1987. He has received numerous awards and grants throughout his career and has exhibited in galleries and museums across Western Canada and abroad.
