A cold press ("not") surface finish is produced by pressing the still
wet paper with a textured surface like a felt mat.This is the most popular finish
for beginners and those working in a traditional manner as it gives a unique character
to brushstrokes, washes and line work in paint, ink and pencil.
A hot press surface finish is formed by pressing the still wet paper
with a fine wire screen, offering a detail sensitive paper(smooth vellum finish
with a very fine tooth) for those who are working with soft drawing materials,
wash, airbrush and pen and ink.
A rough surface finish, with its pronounced peaks and valleys, provides
many rewarding challenges and amazing effects for the experienced watercolourist.
The cylinder mould process, used for such papers as Lanaquarelle and Arches,
gives the quality, look and feel of handmade paper but with greater overall consistency.

Saunders Waterford Watercolour Paper
St. Cuthbert's Mill in England, makers of fine paper for artists and

quality papers. This popular and versatile watercolour paper is made from 100%
long cotton fibre (acid free) and is buffered with calcium carbonate. Waterford
paper is gelatin tub sized and internally sized for added strength. This creates
a surface that is highly resistant to fibre lift when removing masking materials
and receptive to multiple watercolour washes. The paper can withstand multiple
erasions when using pencil or charcoal and lines will not feather when pen and
ink is applied.
