Encaustic Wax Paint

Enkaustikos Hot Cakes are wax paint colours pushed to the limits, maximizing pigment load particular to each paint. Hot Cakes have only the finest, artist grade pigments which are lightfast and engineered to withstand the heat requirements of the encaustic process without colour shifts. A combination of United States Pharmaceutical Grade (USP) Beeswax and high grade Damar Resin is the base of all the Hot Cakes. USP Beeswax is chemical and bleach free, and Damar Resin is filtered through a heat process without the addition of solvents. You will not find colours like them anywhere!

Each Hot Cake comes in a 1.5 ounce tin.

Enkaustikos Wax Medium 1.5oz - $7.26
Wax Medium is the base of Hot Cakes wax paints and is made from USP beeswax and damar resin. The damar crystals are heat filtered without the use of solvents and should not be confused with damar varnish. Wax medium is used as a versatile painting medium to create textures or is added to increase transparency for glazing techniques. It can be used by itself as a colourless paint film, a base coat, and a top coat.

Enkaustikos X-D Wax Medium 1.5oz - $8.75
Made from USP Grade Beeswax and extra Damar Resin, X-D Wax medium has a thick consistency when liquified. Its sticky tack while drying is great for easy texture build up. Once cooled it is resistant to surface alterations like scraping and offers a hard film. It can be used as a base coat, paint extender for glazing, and is an excellent topcoat. You will achieve a glass-like surface with a single application.

Enkaustikos Impasto Wax 10oz - $18.85
Impasto Wax is a blend of high quality pharmaceutical grade beeswax and a pure translucent white microcrystalline wax. It allows artists to inexpensively add actual dimension and sculptural effects to encaustic paintings. Microcrystalline wax is a petroleum-based wax which will give off vapours in the molten stage. Artists should take extra care to provide proper ventilation in their studios.

Enkaustikos Luster Wax 8oz - $10.15
This is a high quality, synthetic, non-petroleum wax derived from coal. It can be added to your wax paint to raise the melting point, increase hardness, and increase shine. Luster Wax requires higher temperatures to melt and blend with your paints, as its melting point is actually 205 degrees F. Due to this higher melting point, only a small amount should be added to your paint. Therefore, take care in order to make sure that you do not burn your paint in your attempt to melt this wax.

Enkaustikos Slick Wax 6oz - $7.49
Slick Wax is a blend of paraffin and synthetic waxes used for cleaning brushes and tools. No need for solvents! Melted Slick Wax is used to rinse brushes and tools between colour changes. The paint will wash out quickly and the excess slick wax should be wiped from the tool or brush with a paper towel.

Enkaustikos Refined Beeswax 8oz - $15.59
This beeswax is 100% natural and has been filtered and purified without the use of harsh chemicals or bleaching agents. It has the same natural scent that you would find with all pure beeswax and comes in the little tiny granules (called prills). This is the same wax used for Hot Cakes wax paints and mediums, and is white in colour.

Damar resin, in combination with beeswax, produces a paint film with a higher index of refraction and Enkaustikos uses it as a main ingredient in their encaustic paints, making the colours appear luminous.
