A cold press ("not") surface finish is produced by pressing the still wet paper with a textured surface like a felt mat.This is the most popular finish for beginners and those working in a traditional manner as it gives a unique character to brushstrokes, washes and line work in paint, ink and pencil. 

A hot press surface finish is formed by pressing the still wet paper with a fine wire screen, offering a detail sensitive paper(smooth vellum finish with a very fine tooth) for those who are working with soft drawing materials, wash, airbrush and pen and ink. 

A rough surface finish, with its pronounced peaks and valleys, provides many rewarding challenges and amazing effects for the experienced watercolourist.

The cylinder mould process, used for such papers as Lanaquarelle and Arches, gives the quality, look and feel of handmade paper but with greater overall consistency.

Arches Watercolour Paper

Saunders Waterford Watercolour Paper
