Conté Pastel Pencils and CrayonsNicholas-Jacques Conté was born in lOrne, France in 1755. A renowned chemist, he invented in 1795 a mixture of graphite and clay which is still used today in the manufacture of graphite leads. He also perfected the quality and manufacture of coloured leads which were already being used by Italian artists in the 14th century and are now called Sepia, Sanguine and Pastel etc. Since 1795, numerous artists have relied upon the superb quality, high lightfastness, and consistency found in all Conté products. All 48 colours of Conté Pastel pencils have a high lightfastness rating of *** and a core lead diameter of 5mm. Conté Pastels are available in crayon and pencil form, in individual and sets.
